Welcome to the EngInHE Research Group
Since its formation in 2006 by Prof. Emma Dafouz, the consolidated EngInHE Research Group (Ref. 940940) has collectively published different works in the area of English linguistics, which have culminated in the book ROAD-MAPPING English medium education in the Internatinonalised University (2020), edited by E. Dafouz and U. Smit, as well as different book chapters and over 120 research papers published in national and international journals such as the International Journal of Bilingual Education and Bilingualism, Applied Linguistics, Modern Language Journal, and Journal of Pragmatics.
Currently, the group consists of 10 members (six Doctors members of the Department of English Studies at UCM, one Professor member of the Department of English Studies at the University of Vienna and three predoctoral researches members of the Department of English Studies at UCM). They work in a coordinated manner, but with their own additional areas of research, related to the role of the English language in the internationalisation of higher education. More particularly, the group deals with the following research areas:
The EngInHE research group has relied upon continued funding since its creation and has recently incorporated younger researchers working directly in the area of English and internationalisation in tertiary education. All together, the members have collaborated for more than 10 years on different publications, research groups, innovation projects, conferences, and more recently on the professional development of faculty at the UCM within the Plan for Curricular Internationalisation (www.ucm.es/pid).

- The acquisition of English as a foreign (EFL) and international language (EIL).
- The acquisition of EFL/EIL in English-medium education (EME).
- The acquisition of EFL/EIL in Content and Language Integrated Learning (CLIL).
- Discourse analysis, and more particularly classroom discourse.
- Internationalization policies in higher education: language policies and planning.
- The acquisition of intercultural competence and pragmatic competence in EIL.
- The development of disciplinary literacies in EME.
